p FINISHED PAINTING
Lady of the Wood, watercolour, 134 134 in (3535cm).
Using a size12, barely damp round watercolour brush, I carefully stroked down the centre of
each birch trunk, picking up a little of the dark paint to create a shadow eff ect. By applying
slightly more pressure in the middle of the trunks the edges were left a bit lighter, creating a
back-lit eff ect.
I mixed a dark green from phthalo turquoise and burnt sienna and a couple of light spring
greens from phthalo turquoise and lemon yellow. To paint the i r tree canopy, I i rst shielded
the foreground with a sheet of cellophane then alternatively sprayed water and l icked paint
from the round brush. I used the same technique with the lemon green mixtures to suggest the
i rst l ush of green leaves to the silver birches. Lastly, to add energy, movement and a little extra
contrast I sketched in lively lines with a dark mix of paint and the palette knife to represent the
i ne branches and foreground twiggy growth
