Ophelia
In this fresh take on the William Shakespeare
play Hamlet, young noblewoman Ophelia
(Daisy Ridley) is adopted by Queen Gertrude
(Naomi Watts) of medieval Denmark as a
lady-in-waiting, but soon falls in love – to
her peril – with the young Prince Hamlet
(George MacKay).
FIVE FACTS:
- This film adaptation essentially pivots the
well-known play so that more of it is told
from the view of Ophelia, a character in the
original play. - Clive Owen also appears in this film
as the fictional King Claudius, Gertrude’s
second husband. - This isn’t Owen’s first time playing a king,
as he also took the title role in the 2004 film
King Arthur. - It’s also not his first time co-starring
with Naomi Watts, as they had previously
appeared in 2009’s The International. - Despite the obvious Shakespearean
influence, the film Ophelia is more directly
based on Lisa Klein’s novel of the same name.
