Layer a marked B triangle-
square atop an unmarked
B triangle-square with each solid navy
triangle facing a solid white triangle
(Diagram 3). Sew^1 ⁄ 4 " on each side of
drawn line. Cut pair apart on drawn
line. Press open to make two small
hourglass units. Each unit should be
21 ⁄ 2 " square including seam allowances.
Repeat to make 144 small hourglass
units total.5
Referring to Diagram 4, lay out
four solid navy 2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares, four
small hourglass units, and one solid
white 2^1 ⁄ 2 " square in three rows. Sew
together pieces in rows. Join rows to
make a center unit. The unit should be
61 ⁄ 2 " square including seam allowances.
Repeat to make 36 center units total.6
Sew solid navy 2× 61 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
to opposite sides of a center unit
(Diagram 5). Join solid navy 2× 91 ⁄ 2 "
rectangles to remaining edges to make
Unit B. The unit should be 9^1 ⁄ 2 " square
including seam allowances. Repeat to
make 36 B units total.7

squares, repeat Assemble A Units,
Step 2, to make 36 C triangle-squares.
Each triangle-square should be 3^7 ⁄ 8 "
square including seam allowances.8

Using marked and unmarked
C triangle-squares, repeat Step 4 to
make 36 large hourglass units. Each
unit should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
seam allowances.9
Lay out four solid navy 3^1 ⁄ 2 "
squares, four large hourglass
units, and one solid white 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square
in three rows (Diagram 6). Sew
together pieces in rows. Join rows to
make Unit C. The unit should be 9^1 ⁄ 2 "
square including seam allowances.

Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
