I paintedtherestofthefacewithwhite,transparent
yellow,rawumber,Spanishearth,Naplesyellow,brown
ochreandrosemadder.I placedthepupilsoftheeyeswith
pureblack,thencarefullypaintedtheirisesaroundthem
usinga smallroundbrush.I addeda highlighttothetipof
thenose,usinga tinydollopofwhiteonmypaintingknife.STEP 7
Havingcompletedtheirises,I paintedthelipswiththereds
onmypalette,addinghighlightsinwhite.Comparedtopaint
fromthetube,thereduced-oilpainthada slightlyresistant
quality,whichwasn’tunpleasanttoworkwith.
STEP 8
I slightlyextendedthewidthofthemouthandthen
placedwhitehighlightsintheeyes.Witha bluepencil,
I sketchedthestripesofthescarf,whichI’dsetupon
a studiomannequintomaintaintheshapesofthefolds.STEP 5
After painting the background, I added the black beret,
applying shadows before lights. Next, I painted the hair
with browns and reds. Because the paint layer was so thin,
I could scrape away some of the hair strands with
a painting knife, creating highlights. I then started adding
colors to the face. Beginning with the shadows, I used
