I’d recently joined Slimming World and I loved the way Food

Optimising fitted around my life. But there was an important event on the

horizon that was going to prove a challenge: Ramadan. It’s a special time

for Muslims, when we fast during daylight hours to feel closer to God and

think about those less fortunate than us. And I’ve always loved getting

together with family and friends to break the fast each day. So while

I wanted to give it my all, I worried that the change in routine would send

my weight loss off track. In the past, I’d broken the fast with deep-fried

samosas and spring rolls, and I knew those weren’t going to help me get

to target! Then I realised something. With the support of group, there was

no reason why I couldn’t combine Ramadan with my new way of eating.

In fact, my Food Optimising meals would be the perfect fuel for a day of

fasting. I’d have a filling suhoor (pre-dawn meal) of porridge and boiled

eggs to keep me going, and after dark I’d gather my family for lightened-

up kebabs, curries or my masala fish & chips for iftar (the meal after

breaking fast). As we prepare to celebrate the holy month this year, I feel

blessed to be sharing delicious and healthy food with my loved ones.
