Multitask with your Mac & iOS
Use your iPhone to sign documents
Just as your iPad can be used as a second screen for your Mac with Sidecar, your iPhone can
also aid your workflow by helping you create and apply digital signatures to your documents.
Make sure that it is running the latest iOS and is signed into the same iCloud account.
Although you have been able to scan and import signatures in Preview for a while,
Catalina has added the option to create one by writing on your iPhone screen.
Digitally sign documents
1
Open a document
Launch Preview and open the
digital document that you would like
to sign. When it’s open, go to Tools>
Annotate>Signature>Manage Signatures.
2
Create a signature
The Markup toolbar will now appear at
the top of your document with the signatures
menu open. From this menu, select the
‘Create Signature’ option.
3
Select iPhone
You will now be able to scan a signature
from a piece of paper using your Mac’s
camera, but as this is rather old-school, click
on the ‘iPhone’ tab at the top instead.
4
Sign on iPhone
Your iPhone should now wake up and
display a space for you to sign. Write your
signature on your iPhone screen and it will
appear in the window on your Mac.
5
Choose signature
Click ‘Done’ to store the new signature
to your signature menu in Preview. Turn your
attention back to your document and then
select a signature from the menu.
6
Apply signature
The signature will be applied to the
document in a floating text box. Drag the
handles to re-size the signature and then
drag it to the desired location in the doc.
Whether you want to watch an
educational video while taking
notes or just want your favourite
YouTube videos playing in the
background, your Mac’s Picture-
in-Picture (PiP) mode allows you
to do just that. Who says you
can’t do two things at once?
