Safari security tips
S
afari on the Apple Mac is one of the safest
ways to browse the web, but that does
not mean safety, privacy and security
cannot be improved. They can and there are many
tweaks, settings and utilities that boost them. For
example, you can choose to automatically open
‘safe’ downloads or not and it is safer not to.
Are downloads hiding trouble? A malware
scanner will tell you and if you download from
outside of the Mac App Store then they are
essential. They can prevent you from accidentally
installing something malicious you downloaded.
Privacy is a major issue these days and there
are many privacy settings and extensions to help
improve privacy when browsing the web. Blocking
ads, trackers and other unwanted content is
essential for security and privacy.

DuckDuckGo in private
The dark address box means this is
a Private window, which hides your
history and cookies for privacy. Use
DuckDuckGo to search the web for
increased privacy, and set Safari to
search with it by default.
Block unwanted content
There are many unwanted items on web
pages, such as adverts and trackers
and some invade your privacy while
others can sometimes be malicious. Use
an extension to block them, like Magic
Lasso or Ghostery.
Check for fraud
Go to Safari
Preferences>Security
and tick the option to
check for fraudulent
sites. Select ‘Extensions’
and disable any not
being used. Apple
checks all extensions,
but some can still read
pages you visit.
Scan
downloads
If you download
files and apps from
websites other than
Apple, they must be
scanned for malware
before being used.
This is Malwarebytes
free, but there are
other malware
scanners like Avira.
The weakest link
No matter how much security you add to Safari or the
Mac, the weakest link is you, the user. The places you
visit on the web, the activities you engage in and the files
you download make a tremendous difference to security
and privacy. Beware of dodgy websites, fake sites and
phishing, malware in illegal software and more.
