THE IDEA A rusty metal cart finds new purpose
as a rolling garden when filled to the brim with
bristling, sculptural plants. Create a desert scene
by adding rocks and pea gravel or sand.
TIP Plant these shallow-rooted specimens in
3 to 6 inches of soil formulated for cactus and
succulents. Good drainage is crucial to their care,
so drill drainage holes into the bottom of a deep
container then fill to planting level with pea gravel.
BLOOMS Golden barrel cactus, Texas sotol,
prickly pear, agave, and ghost plant are the main
players in this garden. If you live in a cold climate,
move your garden into a sunny, protected area to
extend its life span.
THE IDEA Reimagine hanging pots with
woven-wire berry baskets. Garden twine and a
pretty metal bracket complete the vignette for a
season-long bloom harvest.
TIP Sheet moss, available at crafts supply stores,
is a natural lining material for tiny containers.
Moisten the moss then form it to the interior of
the vessel.
BLOOMS Cheerful, yellow-centered Exacum
affine blooms in shades of purple and white from
spring to fall.
