I made a decision not
to hold on to clothes
that don’t fit me or my
personality. I start by
trying to recoup a
little money by selling
trendy, seasonal,
or nearly new items
through resale sites.
Poshmark.com hosts
your “closet,” manages
sales, and takes a
small cut of proceeds.
You post pics, name
prices, and ship.
Thredup.com is easier,
but you make less: Get
a free shipping label
and send in a box of
clothes. They sort and
sell. For work clothes,
I donate to dressfor
success.org. Bras go
to isupportthegirls.org.

REAL-LIFE ADVICE FROM THE EDITORS

AOLD TECH

Keep your most recent
“old” phone in case
of cracked screens or
other snafus. All other
phones and unwanted
computers need to
be backed up then
scrubbed of data
before being recycled
or sold. The processes
vary by device but it’s
important to do them
correctly, so look up
instructions online. To
sell or donate phones:
ninja-technologies.com.
For Macs: powerbook
medic.com. For a
one-stop electronics
drop: Apple, Best Buy,
and Target all offer
trade-in programs for
store credit.

ODDS & ENDS

I took my family’s
recent move as an
opportunity to pare
my stash of unused or
duplicate house stuff
(occupational hazard)
and to get some of
it into the hands of
people who need it.
I discovered that
refugee resettlement
services like Catholic
Charities USA accept
donations of dishes,
bedding, and
furniture—anything in
good condition that
somebody who has
little would need to set
up a home. For details:
catholiccharitiesusa
.org and refugees.org.
Many charities offer
pick up services. For
an online directory of
organizations that will
come to you, search
by Zip code at
donationtown.org.
