circle are international, representing Malaysia,China,the
United Kingdom and Norway. And, across the entire entry
pool, we saw artists who hailed from 30 diff erent countries.
Some of this worldwide expansion is owed to the internet,
of course, and social media, which makes “crossing borders”
so easy. We can also give credit to watercolor associations
and other art organizations that host events that promote
watermedia on a global stage and create wonderful opportu-
nities for education, collaboration and friendship.
With this excitement in mind, we decided to turn this
entire issue into a celebration of watercolor “around the
world,” with featured artists from Malaysia (on page 24),
England (on page 32) and France (on page 40). Th e thrill-
ing conclusion is simple: When it comes to inspiring and
innovative work in watermedia, it’s happening pretty much
everywhere on planet Earth. WAA
lthough it sometimes feels
that the predominant story
in the world is one of confl ict,
when it comes to art—and perhaps
watercolor in particular—the global
story is quite diff erent. With interna-
tional watercolor exhibitions taking
place everywhere from China and Taiwan, to Turkey and
Russia, Italy and Australia, there’s a growing and shared
enthusiasm for the medium that’s cause for celebration.
One place where we at Watercolor Artist continue to see
evidence of this expanding worldwide audience is in the
entry pool for our annual Watermedia Showcase (on page
