was visiting friends on Sanibel
Island, in Florida, he was delighted
to observe these snowy plovers on
the beach. “It was my fi rst opportunity
to observe and draw this species from
life,” he says. “When working with
any ‘new’ species of bird, my
primary aim is to record the most
typical shapes and postures
without getting too bogged
down in the details. I used
my sketches made on the
beach that day as the basis
for these simple water-
