SUSAN MEISELAS
Documentary photographer
Born in Baltimore in 1948, Susan Meiselas
embarked on her life in photography after
gaining an MA in visual education from
Harvard. After her entry to Magnum and
the publication of her first book, Carnival
Strippers, Meiselas travelled to Nicaragua
to document the insurrection led by the
Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional,
which toppled the country’s military
regime in 1979. Her coverage of this
conflict and others in Latin America in the
following years resulted in many books,
exhibitions and awards. Meiselas has also
co-directed two films: Living at Risk: the
Story of a Nicaraguan Family (1986) and
Pictures from a Revolution (1991). Her
photo books include Nicaragua: June
1978-July 1979 (1981), In the Shadow of
History (1997), and Mediations (2018).
She has had solo exhibitions of her work
in Paris, London, Madrid, Amsterdam,
Chicago and New York.

Taken in the Iraqi city of Arbil, 1991,
Susan’s photo shows Jamal Keder Osman
with a picture he carries of himself as a
Peshmerga fighter from the 1963 rebellion,
which sought to establish an independent
Kurdish state in northern Iraq

Wolverhampton. It may look stark
and austere, but it was a haven for the
abused woman who sought shelter
