CANON RF 24-105mm

F4-7.1 IS STM

A new smaller, lighter and cheaper travel lens for the EOS RP

anon has launched
the new Canon RF
24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS
STM, a smaller, lighter
and affordable kit lens
ideally suited to the Canon
EOS RP mirrorless camera
for a compact travel setup.
With its wide focal range the
RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM is a
versatile lens equipped to capture
a range of different scenes and
subjects in high quality, making
it a useful all-rounder lens.
Weighing just 395g and 89x77mm,
the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM is
small and light – compared to the
RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM that’s
chunkier at 700g and 84x107mm
(understandably so as it has a
constant f/4 aperture).
With the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS
STM strapped to the EOS RP it’s

test the lens at f/7.1 and 105mm in
challenging lighting conditions and
when targeting active subjects.
To give enthusiasts the option
for better close-up photographs, the
lens gets a new Canon-developed
0.5x Center Focus Macro mode.

focus distance, so subjects in the
centre of the frame are pin-sharp
and detailed, while the edges of the

Its STM (Stepping Motor)
autofocus provides fast AF
performance for stills, as well as
smooth, quiet AF performance
during video capture, with a

It has the same high-speed
camera-to-lens communication as
all lenses in the RF line-up, with a

Super Spectra Coating for high
optical performance across the

With its narrower
apertures through
the zoom range
from f/4 to f/7.1,
it’s enabled Canon
to keep the size
and price down

combined weight of just 880g (the
EOS RP weighs 485g including
memory card and battery).
Although smaller, Canon UK says
it’s still a sturdy and well-built lens.
Like us, you’re probably
wondering about the new f/4-7.1
aperture range. Obviously the
narrower apertures enable Canon
to keep the lens glass and physical
size down, but is this at the cost of
image quality and focusing?
We asked Canon UK about this
new tactic, and they explained that
with the EOS R mirrorless camera
range’s advanced AF system, plus
the ability to shoot at higher ISOs
now without so much fear of noise,
shooting at f/7.1 isn’t the problem
it once was when struggling with
slow focusing and slow shutter
speeds. We’ll reserve judgement
until we’ve had a chance to fully
