themselves with sticks held in their bills.

performinga rarecombinationof
behavioursthat,together,happenedto
lookratherlikepurposefultool-use.
“IfI hadjustseenbehaviourthatis in
thevideothenI don’tthinkthatI would
havethought‘Ah,tooluse.’However,I
canseehowtheotherobservationcould
maketheinvestigatorsthinkdifferently,”
saysJonathanGreen,a seabirdecologist
attheUniversityofLiverpool,whowas
