other damage. The Hunter Case, like the two
previous developments, originated in England.

landed gentry. Fox hunting men needed to
be able to open the watch and read the time
with one hand, whilst holding the reins of the
hunter (horse) with the other.The advancement in the mechanical
accuracy of the portable timepiece coincided
with the introduction in the 17th Century
of the waistcoat. Introduced by Charles II of
England the shape of the watch evolving to
fit snugly into the pockets of this new style of
menswear. This evolution continued into the
1800’s with another member of the British
Royal family, Prince Albert, the consort to
Queen Victoria, introducing the ‘Albert chain’,
comfortably securing the pocket watch to the
man’s outer-garment by way of a clip.

early clock-watches were shaped into the exotic
and bizarre, often crafted into animals, books,
insects and even skulls. Worn as jewelry and
novelties by the aristocracy these early pieces
were valued as decorative ornaments.
