Comprehension Check
Ask students to answer these questions
independently and then discuss them with the
whole class.
- In what ways did members of the Tudor family
effect change in England?
Possible response: Members of the Tudor family
brought an end to civil war in England, made
England a Protestant country, and established the
Protestant Church of England. - What was the Protestant Reformation and why
did it happen?
Possible response: The Reformation was a reaction
against corruption in the Catholic Church and the
desire to return Christianity to what some religious
thinkers believed to be a purer form of worship. - What was the Renaissance, and where did
it begin?
Possible response: The Renaissance was a rebirth
of learning, as interest in literature, art, and math
regained prominence. It began in Italy. - How was English literacy and exploration affected
by the Renaissance?
Possible response: The increasing use of the
vernacular and the improvement of the printing
press allowed literacy to increase in England.
Advances in astronomy, as well as the invention of
the compass, allowed exploration to expand far
and wide.
