PETER LIVERSIDGE
AN ECHO
Until 17 December 2022

PETER LIVERSIDGE’S exhibition an echo,
explores a theme that has concerned his work
for nearly 20 years - that of the double. The idea
is currently featured in The Double, an
exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in
Washington DC, which includes Liversidge’s
work alongside a roll call of artists (including
Albers, Celmins, Duchamp, Rauschenberg and
Warhol) for whom the double image has

provided a means of understanding and
exploring themes of identity and difference. As
the exhibition’s curator James Meyer describes
it in the accompanying book: “The art of
doubling splays and divides vision. Looking at
doubled images or shapes, we are able to see
ourselves seeing. Works of doubling explore
questions of identity – how we distinguish one
form, or object, or person from another: how
we perceive likeness and unlikeness,
resemblance, and difference.”

CHRISTMAS AT THE PALACE OF
HOLYROODHOUSE
1 December 2022 – 2 January 2023

THIS DECEMBER, visitors to the Palace of
Holyroodhouse can enjoy the State
Apartments transformed with shimmering
Christmas trees, twinkling lights and an
array of activities to entertain during the
festive season.
The festive decorations at the Palace of
Holyroodhouse will include the decorated
Christmas trees in the Throne Room and
Great Gallery, while the Great Stair leading
to the historic State Apartments will be
draped with twinkling velvet garlands,
glistening berries and seasonal foliage.
In the Royal Dining Room, the table
will be laid with pieces from a silver
service presented to King George V and
Queen Mary in 1935 to mark their Silver
Jubilee. And it will be decorated with
ivy, candelabra and spires of faux

candied sugared fruits.
In the Café at the Palace in the Mews
courtyard, there are homemade mince pies
and Christmas cake, mulled wine. Families
visiting the Palace on 17, 22 and 23
December may hear short talks and take
part in festive arts and crafts activities,
including a chance to design their own
greeting cards and Christmas crackers.
Remember to get your ticket validated
and you can return for a year - for free.

Birch Tree

TWENTY-FOUR artists who
have exhibited with the Birch
Tree Gallery present their visual
response to a single poem by
Lithuanian émigré poet Antanas
Škema. The poem is full of
metaphors about the “whiteness
of snow” and the deeper
meaning of life. Most of the
artists have also provided audio

comments about the work they
have created - they are available
on the EXHIBITION web-page.
An audio track accompanies
the works on display in the
gallery until 21 December.
Events throughout the month
and late night opening on
15 December.
