- MIXING SAMPLES
Objective: To familiarise yourself
with pigments
Seeing colour fl owing across the
page is exciting. Use your 10
minutes this month to either
experiment with mixing new
pigments or try out new
combinations of favourite
colours. Try varying the tones as
well as colours. Do not skimp on
the pigments because this
exercise is not a “proper” painting
- use enough to establish the full
range of possible colours and
tones. Use the results to inspire
you when you’re choosing a

DAILY PAINTING TIPS
Jeremy Gardiner on layering colours
Painting a coloured ground (or “imprimatura”) can
create an early unifi ed colour scheme. In the study of
Lulworth Cove pictured above, each layer of paint was
allowed to dry before the next one was applied, each
colour was transparent, and every layer modifi ed any
colour painted over it.
Building up layers enable you to paint forms in
pale washes with additional layers adding richness.
Sometimes the fi rst tentative washes can co-exist
alongside fi nal overlays leaving a record of spontaneity.
I use gum Arabic to slow the drying time of my
watercolour washes, this also increase the transparency
and creates greater luminosity of colour.
