“RAILMASTER” ADVERTISEMENT PUBLISHED IN OMEGA’S GENERAL CATALOGUE G640 OF 1959
SEPTEMBER 2019 VANITY FAIR EN ROUTE
The decades following the Second World War witnessed seismic change: man climbed the highest mountain, descended to the
bottom of the deepest ocean and travelled to the moon (see page 68). Even the daily commute entered a new age as steam gave way to
electricity. But new technology brought new problems: the giant electromagnetic motors that powered locomotives generated
powerful magnetic fields that wreaked havoc with conventional mechanical watch movements. Launched in 1957, Omega’s anti-
magnetic Railmaster watch (the second of the sainted Omega Trilogy) only enjoyed a short production before disappearing in the early
1960s, making it much sought after by 21st-century collectors. Its welcome reappearance in the Omega range came in 2003. N. F.
