INSECT BITES
Gemma Hurditch, naturopath and
lecturer at the College of Naturopathic
Medicine (CNM), grew up in
Australia, which meant she
encountered various biting insects.
‘The fi rst line of defence against insect
bites is covering up,’ says Gemma.
‘Avoid using perfumes, soaps or
skincare preparations that attract
insects, for example those containing
lactic acid. Try the following mix of
essential oils. The mixture is even
gentle enough for children with
sensitive skin.’
● Mix four drops of rose geranium
and four drops of rosemary essential
oils into 40ml of carrier oil. Apply over
exposed skin, especially the ankles,
every hour. If you have sensitive skin,
use only two drops of each oil.
NOTE: This mixture is best used only in
the evening as essential oils can make the
skin sun sensitive.

FLYING AND JET LAG
‘Homeopathic Arnica 30c is a great
remedy to help adjust your body clock
after travelling. For fear of fl ying with
dread, Aconite 30c is recommended,
while for jet lag with a sense of
paralysis, Gelsemium 30c is a good
choice,’ says naturopath Elle Fox.

TR AVEL SICKNESS
Ginger is an absolute must in the
battle against travel sickness,
according to nutritional therapist
Georgie O’Connor. Grate half an inch
of ginger into a mug of boiling water,
add 1tsp of raw honey and sip when it
is cool.
If you have a history of travel
sickness, try taking a zinc supplement,
starting a week before you travel. If
travelling by air, Manuka honey
lozenges can help relieve blocked
ears during take-off and landing.
They also create a barrier to germs
circulating on fl ights and calm and
soothe a dry mouth and throat in
air-conditioned environments.

TUMMY UPSETS
Travel and a change of diet can often
produce constipation, says Elle. As a
short term remedy, try soaking 1tbsp
of organic fl axseeds in a large mug of
hot water overnight and drinking it

the following morning. The seeds
swell and become ‘slippery’, helping to
move waste out of the colon. Make
sure you consume enough pure water
during the day so that you do not
become dehydrated.
To avoid the opposite problem,
traveller’s diarrhoea, avoid ice cubes,
drink only bottled water, and use fresh
ginger and fresh lemon regularly in
food and drinks.

TREATING SUNBURN
Opt for a natural sunscreen that does
not contain harmful chemicals. Check
the Environmental Working Group
website for information (ewg.org). If
you overdo the sun, you can apply
fresh aloe vera juice on the sunburn;
try the homoeopathic remedy
Cantharis 30c; apply diluted apple
cider vinegar 1:1 with water on the
burn; or have a soak in a tepid bath
with three or four chamomile
teabags in it.
