Sarpong is a terrific

sport, a spirited driver

and great fun

I was sitting next to the enchanting June
Sarpong earlier this year and talk inevitably turned
to diversity. Sarpong is the author of Diversify: Six
Degrees of Integration and a sought-after speaker on
this most topical of subjects: she and I spent most of
the evening discussing criteria for what I am sure
will become known as the Sarpong Diversity Index.
When she told me she was off to America to promote
her second book, The Power of Women, I knew that I
had found the perfect En Route cover star to test the
latest Lambo. Sarpong is a terrific sport, a spirited
driver and great fun: her good humour under diluvial
conditions on the racetrack kept everyone smiling.
With such a strong woman at the wheel of such
a powerful car, it seemed like a good idea to explore
the relationship between women and high speed
automobiles: Erin Baker tests the new supercars
with which manufacturers hope to tempt her
demographic (she says statistics show how women
are starting to determine the vicissitudes of the high-
performance car market); Catherine Bond Muir
writes about setting up a motor racing series entirely
for women; and if you thought vintage cars were
just for blokes in oily overalls, then Angela Hucke,
doyenne of the vintage Bugatti world, will correct
that misconception.
We are lucky to have Gina Campbell speaking
about the legacy of her record-breaking father
Donald and grandfather Malcolm, while Monisha
Rajesh writes on her experiences circumnavigating

the globe by rail. On the ocean wave, we also asked
four leading female designers to explain how they
would make cruise ships great again.
In the interests of gender equality, we also have
man’s man Simon Kidston—the go-to-guy if you
want a second-hand car and you’ve a few dozen
million burning a hole in your pocket—writing
about the high-powered peccadilloes of plutocratic
petrodollar playboy par excellence, the last Shah of
Iran. A connoisseur of fine machinery (he was a pilot
as well as a noted motorist), the Shah was also a lover
of fine watches so he would have appreciated the
involvement of Omega, which for a second year has
been kind enough to sponsor this most idiosyncratic
of car/boat/plane/rail magazines. Indeed, Omega
expands the En Route remit beyond our planet and
into space, as CEO Raynald Aeschlimann writes on
the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing, which of
course was timed by Omega.
