TWOINTOONE DOESN'T GO
The originalTarga-Twin UK road tester,
Stu Owen, offers ahistorical tit-bit...
The design and productionof theTarga twin
wasavastproject to undertakeandleft
certain parts of theengineopentolater
development.None moreso than the
exhaust, which initially endedupbeing a
compromise.Tino had wantedtouse a
traditional bigborebox-type exhaust, being
morein keepingwith traditionalstyle. But
that seemed prettypointless, producingsuch
abig engine...only to thenstifleits

Edmonds, chief developer,insistedona
properexpansion chamber,and in theend a
compromise wasmadeandthe‘two-into-
one’ systemwasfitted. Thisstill held the
engine backatad (though minimallydue to
Charlie’sinput),and since thenaproper
ual expansion system
as been designed
nlocking,the

On theotherside of

manifold fitted. However,Ithen spotted
that the main body of the pipe was now
fouling against an engine case stud. So,
off again with the pipe, andamodification
to the length of the stud. Right, sorted!
Well, almost. Now the main bracket on the
body of the pipe, which fits to the engine
casing, isn’t quite lining up. Damn, more
modifications! The same again asIstarted
to tighten up the rear silencer; everything
seemsabit too much under tension for
my liking. So,Islackened everything off,
madeafew more adjustments, and nipped
everything in place. By now I’d been on
with this for three hours, and even missed
Dickinson’sReal Deal... outrageous. I
reflected on that time spent, and it
reminded me of those shitty situations
whenIran Scooterotica Dyno centre, and
acustomer wantedapipe fitting, and then
adyno. In his mindIshould have fitted
the pipe for free, as it’s‘onlyafive-minute
job’! But certainly from my perspective,
even on jobs like that one,Inever charged
anyone for the full hours of fitting a
‘problem component’, despite it being my
lost earnings.Youjust sucked up those
losses and hoped to claw it back somehow.
But the time spent on this pipe wasn’t a
commercial situation for me, thank god, it
wasalabour of love, and damn it was
worth it. The pipe looks absolutely
stunning (in my humble opinion). It
couldn’t look more at home on this
machine; it fits into whatIamtrying to
achieve just perfectly.Iknow it won’t
sound as good as twin-pipes, or have the
same power (not byalong chalk), but it
does look good, so I’m happy.
That’sall for this month. Stay tuned.
