Rock Pigeon, Common Pigeon
Binomial Name: Columba livia
The people of Bangladesh know the Rock Pigeon as 'Jalali Kabutar'. With a tradition of
several hundred years, this pigeon has survived in the tomb of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) inSylhet, Bangladesh. This pigeon is named Jalali Kabutar after the name Hazrat Shah Jalal.
The rock pigeon is a common resident bird of Bangladesh. It can be seen in the villagesand towns of all the country's divisions. Everywhere it is both 'domesticated' and 'wild'.
Their food list includes wheat, paddy, seeds, sprouts, etc. During the breeding season from
April to October, they nest in a householder's attic or building space.
