Making Studio Work Feel Like Plein Air
Spontaneous energy can be lost when you do studio paintings. To give my studio work a fresher feel, I set
up my studio with many of the same restrictions I would have on location. I try to paint from a photo at the
same pace and with the same process that I would if I were painting in plein air. I paint no longer than the
amount of time I would spend on location to avoid overworking. If I have several paintings that I am creating
from reference photos, I take the time to do a painting from life (usually a still life) after each one to keep my
work loose. My goal is to have a seemless transition between my studio and plein air work, always. I attempt
to divide my time evenly between plein air and studio painting. Spending time doing both is the only way to
fine-tune your art.
