TO CAST AN EYE over her whimsical, ethically-
produced fashion label, Spell, it’s almost too
easy to picture the home of co-founder Isabella
“Spelly” Pennefather. The bohemian aesthetic
of her globally-renowned brand has visibly
lent itself to her Byron Bay residence that’s
quintessentially coastal with a western edge.
Now home to Pennefather, her husband
Dougall and two sons Texas, 9, and Jagger, 6,
the building was conceptualised by the family
from the ground up. “We were looking for our
dream home in Byron Bay and an old, tiny red
brick house came up for sale, right in front of
a national park with a short walk to the beach,”
explains Pennefather. “We knew it was the
perfect place for us to live peacefully close to
town and in a quiet, safe street that’s perfect for
bringing up our kids, so we decided to knock it
down and build our new home from scratch.” >
