In addition, trucks can be fully air
suspended and equipped with a system
that can automatically adjust chassis
height depending on speed. Once the
vehicle hits 60 kmh, the system lowers
the chassis to improve the truck’s
aerodynamic profile – though drivers
can override this if road conditions
aren’t suitable for running low.
The engine accounts for four per cent of
this, with the remainder achieved via
more efficient rear axles, altered
gear-shifting strategies and an updated
I-See map- and topography-based cruise
control system (more on this shortly).
Of course, turbo compounding comes
at a price. After some digging we were
told the D13TC engines add €4000 to the
bill; but Volvo’s powertrain strategy
director, Mats Franzén, told Trucking the
investment should pay for itself after
120,000 km of long-haul operation.
The TC system also adds 101 kg of
weight to the engine. To mitigate this, a
lighter 12-tonne rear axle (RSS1244B) is
offered. This is good for gcws up to 44
tonnes and saves around 100 kg in kerb
weight. Problem solved.
I-See clouds
The map-based I-See cruise control
system is an important part of Volvo’s
fuel-saving strategy and is designed to
keep the vehicle moving as economically
as possible. It uses cloud-based map
data to analyse the topography of the
route ahead, making best use of the
truck’s momentum to ensure the correct
