³Dimple Dies Hole Flaring Set
MACS Equipment is now distributing
the NZ-made MFS 5-piece dimple
die set. Each male and female die
is CNC machined from 1 040 billet
steel and then blued for corrosion resistance. These are
forming dies for steel, aluminium and stainless steel up to
2 .0mm (12G) and require a hole the same size as the die
before placing the die in a 20T press to form the 4 5-degree
flare. Each die is laser etched with the size, and the set
includes five dies: 15mm, 20mm, 25mm, 32mm + 50mm.

³Spindle Testing Service Underway
LV VTA has, since releasing the Super Bell brand
Ductile Cast Iron Spindles Safety Alert, adapted
its in-house axle-testing equipment to allow
a simple metallurgical examination of early
Ford V8-style aftermarket spindles. This allows
LV VTA toquickly identify cast iron spindles,
and validate any other steel spindles which don’t
have documentation which confirms they are
made from forged steel. This process involves
a small area on the back of the spindle flange
being highly polished, to allow a microscopic
examination of the component’s microstructure.
This examination will leave a bare-metal patch,
about the size of a $1 coin. Assuming the spindle
passes, this area will need to have any paint or
coatings touched up by the owner. However
this is also the same area that the serial numbe
will be stamped, so must remain visible so the
certifier can inspect it once fitted to the vehicl
Outcomes of testing:
Pass: If a spindle is found to be a steel
forging, a unique serial number will be
stamped onto each part, and a certificate
will be issued. The cost for this test will be
$50, including GST for each spindle, plus the
cost of returning the parts by courier.
Fail:If a spindle is found to be made from cas
iron, the spindle will be retained by LV VTA,
rendered inoperable, and sent for destruction.
This is being done to remove these components
permanently from the used parts supply-chain.
To of f s et this loss, there will be no charge for the
test to the customer. This enables the customer
to direct that cost saving towards replacing the
faulty spindles with proper approved forged
steel versions and is LVVTA’s way of assisting
affected hobbyists who will inevitably be out-
of-pocket. However, each customer will need
to pre-agree to releasing any sub-standard
parts to LVVTA should they fail the test. This
pre-agreement will be written into the terms
and conditions of the testprocedure.
Footnote: A comprehensive report on cast-iron and
forged steel spindles is currently being drafted
and will be published as soon as available.
