Rugby World UK – August 2019

(Tuis.) #1
RUNNING SCARED
“A shocker. I still believe
to this day and will probably
always believe that we would
have been in a World Cup final
if it wasn’t for what happened
at the end of the quarter-final
against Australia at Twickenham
(an incorrect penalty decision that
Australia kicked for a 35-34 win).
“Look, mistakes happen, but
the boys will always put their
hand up and admit they got it
wrong. We made mistakes in the
lead-up to Craig Joubert’s wrong

call that cost us everything. The
fact that he made the error and
then ran off made it worse.
“It’s just as well there’s no audio
on that photo. There’s another
one of me pointing, saying, ‘Get
tae...’. It was the ultimate sickener.
“We’d have beaten Argentina in
the semi-final, I’m convinced of
that. We’d have been in the final
against New Zealand. To have
it snatched away from us was
bitterly disappointing, but we have
another opportunity in Japan and
we’re looking forward to it.”

GREGOR THE GREAT
“The greatest coach I’ve ever
worked with. Gregor (Townsend)
always seems to get the best out
of me. He wants to play fast,
exciting rugby. He wants to play to

the strengths of the Scotland team
by attacking with ambition. That’s
fantastic for a guy like me.
“The only downside is he’s from
Gala and I’m from Hawick, but
we’ll not hold that against him!”

SURF’S UP
“The Lions tour in 2013. We
were in Noosa on Queensland’s
Sunshine Coast and I went one
from one on the surfboard.
“Tried it once, stayed on and
never tried it again. I’m so white
you can see through me!”

CHIEFS GOAL
“I’m extremely fortunate to
be picked up by a club (Exeter,
here attacking against Hogg) that
are competing for all trophies, a
club I really want to go to, a place
where I can learn new things and
improve as a player and challenge
myself in a different league.
“Myself and my wife Gill believe
we’ve picked the perfect club.”
