MOVIES

Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Jeremy Renner’s

Hawkeye and Don Cheadle’s War Machine.

Faced with retrieving the Infinity Stones, the

team must go back in time to alter the future.

As you might expect, this is a movie full of

action and stunning special effects. But it’s also

a character study, with screenwriters Christopher

Markus and Stephen McFeely – working with

the directors, brothers Anthony and Joe Russo

  • cleverly imbuing the film not just with

nostalgia, but a great sense of personal

anguish, urgency and, in many cases, humour.

If you have tracked the intrepid Marvel

characters’ adventures over the years, Endgame

Following on from Avengers: Infinity War,

this film may sound like the end of the road

for the Marvel heroes we’ve come to know

and love, but there’s still hope that it isn’t.

Avengers: Endgame is a satisfying return

that sees Josh Brolin’s Thanos holding the

world to ransom with his six Infinity Stones.

Pitted against him are the Avengers in their

various guises, including Iron Man’s Tony

Stark (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America

(Chris Evans), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Captain

Marvel (Brie Larsen) and a decidedly unfit

Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Plus let’s not

forget Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow,

  • the second-highest grossing movie of all

time, with a global box office of more than

US$2.7 billion – is an unmissable experience

that brings them together once more to

explore themes of sacrifice and heroism.

All the performances are top-rate –

what a cast the franchise has been able

to assemble over the years. We should

probably expect nothing less, but they bring

conviction to their roles, regardless of their

seeming otherness. Quite a feat.

There is little to resist in this instalment

from the Marvel universe. Embrace it.
