GLAZED OVER
Traditionalbutler’s pantries in grand country houses tend to be largely glazed, as they are often enclosed
and in the basement, and the glass allows as much natural light as possible in. In this scheme by Kitchen
Architecture, the concept has been moved upstairs and given a modern makeover with a design that
features black Crittall-style glazing bars and takes full advantage of the generous ceiling height. Sticking
to open shelves keeps everything visible and easier to reach, but to allow for a little low-level clutter, start
the glazing a metre or more above the floor. Beautiful details such as hanging rails in a bronze aluminium
finish are a further departure from the pantry’s origin as a purely functional, out-of-sight space.
