makes a rash decision

● DRAMA / 9pm / BBC1

No matter what you think of

George Warleggan’s villainous
ways, seeing him grieve so deeply

for his wife, to the point where
he’s having visions of her, has

been heartbreaking. But things
come to a head in a brutal

manner when Uncle Cary
enlists a doctor to carry out a

barbaric cure for George’s so-
called madness, involving

leeches, blistering and shackling
him to the bed to (in the words

of the physician) ‘subdue his
spirit’. Far from providing a cure,

it simply pushes George to the
edge! Meanwhile, Poldark isn’t

Poldark without a mine disaster
and when Wheal Plenty suffers

a fatal rock collapse, Ross –
egged on by an impetuous Ned

  • risks lives to stage a foolhardy
    rescue. Who will come out

alive? HHHHHHD

The Misadventures of

Romesh Ranganathan

● TRAVELOGUE / 9pm / BBC2

NEW

Romesh sets off on more travels to countries
you’re probably not going to find in your average
travel agent’s brochure, kicking off with Zimbabwe, once
ruled under the dictatorship of Robert Mugabe. Most
tourists don’t make it past Victoria Falls, so Romesh
shows us what we’re missing. HHHHLP

The Third Man

● FILM / 12.40pm / BBC2

A regular feature on ‘best ever’ film lists, this classic
British noir turns 70 this year. As a whole, it’s pretty
much a perfect film, but there are lots of separate parts
to recommend it, from Anton Karas’ zither theme to
Graham Greene’s screenplay and Orson Welles’ famous
speech about the cuckoo clock. It’s also got arguably the
best ending to a film... Earlier, at 11.55am, Orson Welles
features in Talking Pictures. HHHHHJP
