Fake or Fortune?

Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould set out to

find out the provenance of an exceptional

18th-century portrait of aristocrat

Peniston Lamb II. Philip spotted the

painting at the Cecils’ family home and

instantly believed it to be by renowned

Regency artist Thomas Lawrence, who

painted Queen Charlotte. However, the

family have documents attributing the

painting of their ancestor to Maria

Cosway, who was a contemporary of

Lawrence. What follows is a fascinating

paper trail, with help from clothing

historians and genealogists... Will science

have the final say? If Philip’s hunch is

correct, the painting, already worth

thousands, could be valued at over half

The voiceover by ‘storyteller’ John

Boyega is wearing thin, but the wildlife

footage continues to impress, particularly

the hunting and migration sequences. At

the watering hole, as drought threatens,

the zebra foal that survived treading on a

crocodile has caught the eye of some lions.

And while the mud beneath the surface is

a deadly trap for some, it’s an attraction

for the elephants and warthogs that come

down to cool off. Elsewhere, a leopard

comes off worst in an encounter with a

porcupine, the reappearance of the black-

maned lions spells trouble for Salika the

hyena and Kali the lioness, and a bushfire

ravages the Serengeti. HHHIM

After England’s amazing success in winning the

World Cup on the final ball of a ‘super over’, the

team now face their big rivals Australia in The Ashes Test

series, which starts at Edgbaston today and runs until

mid-September. Captained this time by Joe Root,

England are likely to still be relying on World Cup heroes

including Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler to give them the

edge over holders Australia. Nightly highlights air on
