WHEAT
Brews like Blue Moon
and Shock Top have a
smooth, yeasty taste that
makes them great for
summertime. Pair them
with a lemon or orange
slice for a colorful garnish.

LAGERS AND
PILSNERS
Lagers are crisp and
refreshing but lack €avor, so
people o‚en drink them in
the form of popular brands
like Budweiser more than
in cra‚ breweries. Pilsners
are a type of lager that have
more hops, resulting in a
spicy taste.

PALE ALES AND IPAS
Pale ales come in a number
of styles, all of which are
generally hoppy and citrusy.
Arguably the most popular
are IPAs, which are even
hoppier and sometimes
bitter, depending on
your senses.

SOURS
Rising in popularity over the
past few years, these acidic
beers range from a little
lemony to a pucker-up,
Warhead-level tart.

STOUTS AND
PORTERS
The darkest of beers, stouts
and porters are almost
identical. Both tend to have
a coˆee or chocolaty taste.

Funkatorium
BREW TO TRY: Black Angel Barrel
Aged Sour
Next, drive a mile east into the city’s
South Slope neighborhood, appropriately
called the “Brewery District.” Walk a block
in any direction, and you’ll bump into
a brewery. The Funkatorium is a part of
Wicked Weed Brewing, and it’s the East
Coast’s ™rst taproom dedicated solely
to sour and “funky” beer. Book the “Sour
Sunday” tour for a two-and-a-half-hour
exploration of sours. 147 Coxe Ave., 828-

Burial Beer Co. spook you. A‚er you take
in the doomsday-style of can artwork
by David Paul Seymour, sip on unusual
European-style lagers and super strong

Ben’s Tune Up
BREW TO TRY: Ben’s American Sake
This sake brewery is an anomaly in South
Slope—Ben’s Tune Up has an expansive
beer list and a beer garden with live
music every night, but the star is its
American sake, made with rice, koji, yeast,
and mountain water from Asheville’s
Watershed. (Bonus: Sake will give you
less of a hangover than its alcoholic
cousins, beer and wine.) 195 Hilliard Ave.,
