Australasian Dirt Bike – September 2019

SURPRISINGLY,TINYLITTLE

riders do. Last month, a young
Ky Woods mounted on a KTM
65SX was fl oating on cloud nine
after winning a moto at the
Junior Motocross World
Championship in Pietramurata,
Italy, before fi nishing third in the
fi nal moto for second overall.
It was a herculean effort as
our riders attempted to defend
their world championship status
after taking home the gold at
Horsham last year. Compatriot
Kayden Minear fi nished second
in the fi nal moto of the 65cc
class for fourth overall.
In the 85cc class, Ryan
Kingsford, mounted on a
Yamaha, fi nished 13th while KTM
rider Campbell Williams fi nished
24th on his 85SX. You can read
all about their heroics in Kidz
Korner next issue.
While our young punks have
been racing on the other side of
the world, we’ve been racing
time zones and jetlag to produce
this issue. Desert weapon Ben
Grabham headed to Finland for
the launch of the MY20 Husky
machines (page 38) but almost
missed the plane after a nasty
argument with a roo on his way
home from Finke.
Grabbo’s opinion is that the
lower seat height of the new
models makes them an even
better extreme enduro machine.

WHAT FLOATS?
As Grabbo landed back in Oz,
the legendary Geoff Braico
almost passed him in the airport
on his way to Italy for the Beta
MY20 launch.
It was a tough trip for Braico,
who was allowed a couple of
extra days either side of the
launch to experience the town of
Pisa where he attempted to
retile the Leaning Tower. Geoff
was impressed with the new
machines, gravitating towards
the two-strokes, but you will
have to wait until next issue to
read what he thought.

And while we were fl ying,
those racing Hattah were nearly
drowning. The 2019 edition of
the Penrite Hattah Desert Race
featured some of the worst
conditions we’ve ever seen, with
fl ash fl ooding wreaking havoc.
The area is known for high
levels of sodium so most of the
bikes are now trash. Braico
managed to ride his brother’s
Kato to 17th but absolutely
lunched it before handing it back
without a hint of remorse.
Sounds familiar, glad it wasn’t
one of our long-term test bikes
this time ... Daniel Milner proved
he is simply too good, putting
his KTM 500EXC-F on the top
step of the box in dominant
fashion after Josh Green, Jack
Simpson and Daniel Sanders all
had issues.
In other news, reigning ISDE
champ Milner announced he
would not be fl ying to Europe
for this year’s event as he and
his partner are expecting their
fi rst child in October. The selfi sh
side of me wants to see him race
in Portugal because I know what
he is capable of, but I
understand how important it is
to support your other half
during pregnancy (my wife is
expecting around the same
time). Here’s hoping Milner’s
replacement, Fraser Higlett, and
the rest of the team can bring
home the gold without him.
