THERE IS PLENTY of great

riding from Tassie all the way

up to the Cape, but us east

coasters often forget about the

west. A quick glance at a map

will remind you that Western

Australia covers an enormous

area. That area is full of epic

terrain to discover on two

wheels, but most of us wouldn’t

know where to start.

West Coast Trailbike Safaris

is a tour company based in the

town of Kirup, 228km south of

Perth. It is owned and operated

by John and Georgia Staines,

with help from their children

Noah and Mia.

John has been a passionate

off-road rider most of his life

and while injury brought a halt

to his racing ambitions when he

was a teen, he continued to

explore south-west Australia

via bike trips, surfi ng odysseys

and 4WD jaunts. Eventually he

settled in Bridgetown and

that’s where West Coast

Trailbike Safaris was born.

The company is a licensed

commercial operator and John

and Georgia aim to promote

responsible riding and respect

for the environment and

landowners. The tours depart

from a purpose-built facility in

Kirup, which is about a

40-minute drive from Bunbury.

There is a range of tours to

choose from which cater for all

levels, but intermediate riders

will be most at home here. That

said, the tours can be moulded

to the riders’ abilities, so if

you’re looking for something

easier or harder, then just say

the word!

The company doesn’t

currently have hire bikes, so

you have to bring your own.

Just make sure it is fully

registered and in good

mechanical condition. The

guides and sweep riders have a

great knowledge of the local

area and are also fi rst-aid

trained. They carry all the

necessary safety equipment

and tools.
