I
t is quite natural to be confused about
what to do after 10+2, especially if you
are looking for non-traditional cours-
es. Natasha, a class 12 student from
Hyderabad who is pursuing commerce,
contacted us to know what courses she
could do in future.
Q. Hi, I am studying in class 12 and
my subject is commerce. What can I
do after class 12?
A. Well, the first course that comes to
mind is Bachelors in Commerce which
is generally pursued by commerce stu-
dents usually.
Q. Is B.Com enough? I mean, what is
the path after that?
A. See, you could start with foundation
courses for professional courses like
Chartered Accountancy, Cost Account-
ancy or Company Secretary. Another
option is to take the entrance test to
become an actuary. Let’s look at them
in detail.
ACET is the entrance test for Insti-
tute of Actuaries of India. For this 10+2
is enough. Thereafter you could reg-
ister as a member and start studying.
There are 15 subjects to clear to reach
a fellowship. However, you could start
gaining work experience while study-
ing. Typically, if you pass 2 to 3 core
technical papers, you can start working
and then continue studying to complete
the course. The details can be found at
“http://www.actuariesindia.org/”www.
actuariesindia.org.
Chartered Accountancy (CA):

Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA):
Another avenue is to pursue the CFA
course, complete graduation and opt
for careers in banking, stock markets
and such. There are many certifications
also available to enhance one’s skill sets.
Q. What if I want to look at other
options that suit my temperament?
I am a very open and communicative
person. I think something that allows
me to use these skills would be good
for me. What do you think of media?
Is there something I can do, maybe in
TV or radio?
A. Good communication is actually a
must for any career. However, if you
think media would be a good choice, you
can do a Bachelors in Journalism and
Mass Communication. These are pre-
requisites to careers in media, including
print. You do have specializations in
media like Filmmaking, Mass Commu-
nication, Public Relations and so on.
Ideally, a degree would not be enough
to make a mark. So, a postgraduate
degree would be a better bet. Symbio-
sis International (Deemed University),
Manipal University, IIMC, Asian Col-
lege of Journalism, Mudra Institute of
Communication are some of the insti-
tutions that you can look at. You have to
understand the various specializations
