46 AMATEUR GARDENING 29 JUNE 2019

RHS/Suzanne Plunkett

I HAVE a friend
who suffers from
pulsophobia. The
term actually
relates to a fear
of any of the pea,
bean and pulse
family (which
includes lentils and
baked beans), but her
particular phobia is that of the
green garden pea. In a restaurant, if
there is a single pea on a plate of served
food, she cannot even look at it, let
alone tackle eating it.
This is not uncommon and is related
to other phobias people have of such
seemingly innocuous things as cats,
clowns, and even knees and farmyard
barns. These are different to those
phobias of things like spiders and
heights which, in some circumstances,
could harm you.
One lady in a TV documentary years
ago said she had to know where the
peas were in a supermarket before
she went in. She said of peas: “They
tend to just look at me – ganging up
on me. I would like to be a dinner lady
at my daughter’s school, but I’m not
even able to be in the same room as
someone eating peas.”

A fear of... peas?
