WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO
WARM UP BEFORE A RUN?
“I suggest that you do a very short barefoot run on
soft grass as a warm-up before your running session.
Run for 10 minutes at an easy pace, jog 80 to 90
seconds and then for 30 seconds pick up the pace.
The beauty of running barefoot is it forces you to
incorporate all of those points because otherwise,
if you don’t, it hurts when you run barefoot, and you
don’t run properly. Your body is adept at adjusting
your techniques to make sure it avoids pain.”
SHOULD I MAKE A
R U N N I N G P L A N?
“Running plans can be very useful, but a lot of people
tend to jump from one plan to another, or they come
up with a Frankenstein monster, where they take
principles of one plan, incorporate it in a 10km
running plan, and then they’ll take some speed-
running intervals from another plan. It sounds
good on paper, but it’s not practical or beneficial.
So, find a plan, be consistent with it and be patient!”
I CAN’T KEEP UP WITH MY
RUNNING PARTNER – HELP!
“Firstly, try not to judge your running ability and
improvement against everyone else. Running, at
its heart, is a very personal sport. So, it’s really
important that you’re clear on why you’re running,
and what your own personal goals are. It’s great to
get some motivation running with others, and to get
some encouragement but, at the same time, don’t base
your self-worth or your results on what other people
are doing. Focus on smart progression and not doing
too much too soon. The results will come from that.”
