Winchester 42gr Max subsonic rimfire ammunition features
a unique 42gr Power Point truncated-nose hollow-point bullet.
This 42gr bullet produces better expansion compared to
other rimfire bullets so terminal performance is enhanced,
even at subsonic velocities, and functions better in semi-
automatic rifles too. Lubrication looks the same wax type as
on the 40gr bullet.

As with the 40gr subsonic version, the 42gr Max bullet
has a very pronounced truncated look. It is wider at the top
end and more parallel and this is where the extra 2gr of lead
weight is added. It thus forms a blunter forward or front
section to the bullet that, when combined to the same hollow
point cavity, forces the side walls back rapidly and hits with
more surface area to release its kinetic energy immediately.
On the 40gr bullet, you have a diameter of 0.156" at the tip
compared to 0.176" on the heavier 42gr bullet.
They also make a black copper-plated lead subsonic bullet
of 45gr weight, which is designed for use in semi-automatic
weapons for reliable function – but that’s for another test on
semi-auto rounds.

As usual, I set up the chronograph at 15 feet (I call that
muzzle velocity) from the Sako rimfire custom with 14.5"
