separated as expected and fragmented along the cavity and
just behind the rested bullet. The retained weight of the 40gr
bullet was 32gr with 8gr of shrapnel. The bullet had
mushroomed perfectly to a diameter of 0.3125". Maximum
expansion of the cavity was 0.3895" and the wound channel
volume was 12.65ml.
The 42gr Max next. This penetrated a total of 7.25" and
again dead straight penetration and the hollow point
fragmented along the cavity and deposited the front section
just behind the rested bullet in a fan shape.
The retained bullet weight was 30.25gr with 10gr of
shrapnel and, like the 40gr, the bullet had a lovely
mushroom shape of 0.3361. The cavity was much bigger,though, at 0.5025" and the wound channel volume had
increased to a whopping 18.5ml.
It’s amazing how just a few more grains of lead and
reconfigured bullet design can make such a difference to
performance. The 42gr bullet had expanded faster than the
40gr bullet due to slightly higher velocity and more frontal
nose area, which resulted in dumping its energy quicker for a
larger wound channel and thus penetrating less as the
energy was expelled faster than the 40gr bullet.
Performance on game is better with the 42gr Mas, but you
have to decide which is best for you as the reality is that
each rifle is different and needs to be tested for your needs.&21&/86,21
This is a classic example of not judging a book by its cover
as on the surface a 2gr difference to many – and that
includes me – may not seem much, but as the real-world
tests show it makes a big difference.
Ultimately, every rimfire rifle is different and, as Harry
Potter fans know, the wand chooses the wizard, so the rifle
chooses the ammo. If your rifle shoots these 42gr
Winchesters as well as this Sako custom, you are onto a
winner as not only do you have yourself an accurate
subsonic round for vermin but its terminal ballistics can be
