SMART TECH

Apple designer’s

iconic legacy

What is it? iMac
How much? From
$1699
Pros: The original “Bondi
Blue” iMac, with translu-
cent plastic and a chunky
CRT monitor, was Jony
Ive’s first unique hit over
20 years ago. The versions
today look nothing like it,
but are still the world’s
most stylish all-in-one
computers. Specs start at
the humble end of things,
but stretch to some pret-
ty powerful (and scarily
expensive) peaks.
Cons: The entry-level
option shows its age.
If budget allows, consider
the 4K versions or
a 27-inch upgrade.

‘D

esigned by Apple in California’
has been emblazoned like a sig-
nature on Apple’s hardware for years,
but in reality it’s shorthand for someone
else’s authorship: the distinctive work
of British industrial designer Jony Ive.
At the time of writing, Ive had just
announced his departure from the com-
pany after almost three decades, and
it’s hard to imagine another designer in
that timeframe making a bigger impact
on technology (or really on anything).
Steve Jobs might have been the guru
who introduced the world to iMacs,
iPhones, iPads, iPods and so on, but Ive
and his team shaped them into exist-
ence. Chief among his hallmarks: sleek,
thin devices with smooth curves, round
elements, splashes of colour, silver
and dark aluminium and a provocative,
extreme minimalism.
Admittedly, this describes the way
a lot of tech looks these days, but Ive
popularised most of these trends,
ushering PCs away from the dullness
of the “beige box” era. Not all of his
designs were successes, but the hits
were outright classics. Here’s a snap-
shot of the latest versions of iconic
devices he dreamt up.

What is it? iPad Pro
How much? From
$1229
Pros: Perhaps no other
device encapsulate’s Ive’s
bold minimalism as much
as the iPad: the lure of a
fully functioning, capable
computer housed inside a
thin piece of glass. Succes-
sive hardware and software
revisions have greatly
expanded on the original’s
potential, particularly the
newer Pro models with
the Apple Pencil stylus and
Smart Keyboard Folio.
Cons: Looks and feels
great, but this tablet costs.
The top model (with acces-
sories) retails for almost
$3500. iKid you not.

What is it? iPod touch
How much? From $299
Pros: The first iPod was
Ive’s transformative sec-
ond act: the world’s first
must-have MP3 player.
Today, in a world dominat-
ed by smartphones,
do we still need iPods?
Apple clearly thinks so,
since it has just updated
the almost 18-year-old
product. The 7th genera-
tion starts with 32GB of
storage and runs on an
A10 Fusion chip.
Cons: Looks and feels
like an iPhone but can’t
make calls and is entirely
dependent on wi-fi. Pock-
et-friendly for games and
apps notwithstanding.

What is it?
A fundraiser for Australia’s largest animal
welfare group.
Where your money goes:
Each year around 140,000 animals – from koa-
las to kittens – find themselves relying on the
care of the Royal Society for Prevention of Cru-
elty to Animals. Happily, many are reclaimed,
rehomed or returned to the wild. Not only does
the RSPCA help domestic pets find their for-
ever home, it also plays a frontline role in the
battle for animal welfare. The RSPCA’s Cup-
cake Day, to be held on August 19, is all about
baking to fight animal cruelty. Grab your apron,
cook up some scones, lamingtons or cup-

cakes and rest
assured that
the dough you
raise from the
sale of your treats
to friends, co-work-
ers and community
members will help to rescue,
rehabilitate and rehome animals in need.
How to donate:
To sign up, grab an apron and baking tray and
head to rspcacupcakeday.com.au. You’ll find
recipes plus prizes. It’s the purrfect way to
make a difference to animals in need.
