personify the identity of an individual, a

moment in time or an entire movement.

When we look at a portrait we might see

common elements that mirror ‘the self’ or

unique attributes that speak to a moment

in time. In Black Lives Matter we catch a

glimpse of a person or moment that is

private, pensive and invites us to feel the

challenges of daily life.”

In the painting Joy, Lopez shows an

exuberant expression of what it is like

to connect with the self and others in

a moment of bliss. The inspiration for

these paintings was the feeling that the

subjects exude.
