ON THE SUBJECT OF WHEELS
I continue to be impressed by the quality of
your magazine. The article on alloy wheels in
the July issue was excellent, particularly the
clear explanation of offset (ET), and the
wheel manufacturers’ recommendation to
keep the offset as close to that of the OE
wheels as possible.
Similarly, the article Buying Used Wheels
was most informative. I would however,
question the suggestion to simply Loctite
double-ended wheel studs into the hub. This
is certainly a solution to the question of
wheel bolts and wheelnuts, and may have
been done for some time without problems.
However, many engineers would not
consider this to be best automotive
engineering practice. The opportunity for
failure is greatly increased with possible
catastrophic results. It is for this very reason
that car manufacturers — as you note in the
article — locate wheel studs on a spline from
the rear of the hub.
Also, while not having direct hands-on
experience, I would question that swapping
wheel studs from Metric to Imperial, or vice
versa, is a simple operation. Normally, the
spline dimensions would vary between
Metric and Imperial studs.
