The war from drugs
Chinese war junks are destroyed by East India Company ships in Anson’s Bay during the
second battle of Chuenpi on 7 January 1841, a key clash in the First Opium War. This
conflict had begun in September 1839 shortly after Lin Zexu’s supposed triumph in
destroying opium stocks, and ended with the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842, which ceded
Hong Kong to the British and required China to pay substantial war reparations
