APPETITE FOR ART

When Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii

in AD 79, killing at least 1,000 people,

it froze our perception of the city

forever at that moment in time. A new

exhibition at Oxford’s Ashmolean

Museum aims to show Pompeii’s

citizens in a new light, through the lens

of two of their passions in life: eating

and drinking. And there would have

been plenty of delicacies to choose

from. The city was surrounded by rich

resources: animal-grazed plains, hills

striped with vineyards, seas alive with

the kinds of fish illustrated in this

first-century-BC mosaic. Objects set to

go on display, for the first time in the

UK, will include frescos, furnishings

and, of course, the food itself, carbon-

ised during the eruption.
