get her state pension, and will she still
receive any disability benefit help?

A

Employment and Support Allowance
stops when you reach state pension
age. Also, you can no longer claim for
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or the
Personal Independence Payment (PIP). If
your wife has paid at least 10 years
National Insurance, she will be entitled to
a state pension. She will need 35 full
qualifying years to receive the full
pension, which is £168.60 weekly.

Q

I’m due to get my state pension
later this year. I’ve been told my

National Insurance contributions are
short between 2015 and 2017. I don’t
understand why. Is there anywhere I
can go to find out more?

A

Have you checked via gov.uk/check-
state-pension? It will give you a state
pension forecast of how much you could
get and when, along with how to
increase it, if you can. It may be that you
were contracted out of the additional
state pension at some stage during your
working life. This would mean you paid
lower NI contributions and therefore you
get less state pension.

THE DRESS/
OUTFIT
Hitched figure: £1,321

Posh on a shoestring
Designer dress shops have sales too,
but the real bargains are when they
sell off the samples people have tried
on in store. Most are size 10-12, so
you may need to get them altered –
and cleaned. But you can easily get
your hands on a dress for less than
half price.
Mid-range
You don’t have to go to a designer
dress shop, there are high-end
high street stores with ranges for
between £200 and £500. Time it right
by hitting the sales – and cut costs
even further.

Budget
Buying secondhand can save you a
fortune. Try eBay or Pre-loved, but
one of the best places to look is
Oxfam’s online bridal shop (oxfam.
org.uk/shop/bridal), which has
dresses costing between £50 and £200

  • you’ll even find some by big
    designer names.

Posh on a shoestring
If photos are really important, you
may want to hire a professional,
but prices vary enormously, so
shop around. Check their work
so that you’re not paying less
because they’re not very good.
Keep costs down by reducing the
time they’re with you to the cere-
mony and shortly afterwards. Mock

up cake-cutting pictures before you
eat.
Mid-range
Find a professional willing to
provide photos of your day online.
You then download the ones you
want, print them off and make up
your own album. Editing, printing
and albums take as long as taking
the photos, so you’ll get a much
cheaper package.
Budget
All your guests will be bringing
camera phones, so there will be
plenty of photos on the day. You can
get people to upload them to a
Facebook group, and save or print
them from there. You can ask some
guests to take specific group photos
if you want some more formal shots
of the day.

MUSIC/
ENTERTAINMENT
Hitched figure: £1,014

Posh on a shoestring
If you want music for your cere-
mony, get in touch with local
colleges which can put you in
contact with music groups that
will charge you a fraction of costs
for professionals. You can do the
same for a band. Or check if friends
know anyone who you can barter
with.
Mid-range
In the evening, swap live music for
a disco – typically costing a few
hundred pounds.
Budget
Everyone can be a DJ now. You can
hire lights and an amp or borrow
from a friend or relative. Some
venues also have these items avail-
able. Download a playlist and let the
disco look after itself.

HONEYMOON
Hitched figure: £4,545 (mini-
moon – £1,051)
Posh on a shoestring
You don’t have to go away the
second the reception ends. You
can take your time to find a last-
minute short-haul bargain when it
suits, but outside of the school holi-
days. You’ll then pay as little as
£1,500 for an all-inclusive five-star
break.
Mid-range
Romance doesn’t have to mean a
beach. You could opt for a city break
to Rome or Paris, and keep the costs
down.
Budget
One popular option is to ask for
donations towards the honey-
moon instead of wedding gifts.
Once you know the budget you
have, you can opt for something
slightly out of season – and then it
doesn’t have to cost you a penny. Or
consider options such as a romantic
cabin in the Highlands, a cosy
cottage at the seaside or a few
nights under canvas (weather
permitting).
