JAPAN 2020: ONE YEAR TO GO
Introducing a new Olympic sport..
Gold silver or bronze, ALL
the medals will actually be
made out of old mobiles,
laptops and tablets in the
most expensive summer
games EVER costing £10bn
From TONY BANKS in Tokyo
WHEN they watch the
athletes climb the podium
in Tokyo next summer, the
locals will truly feel a part
of the moment.
In fact, it is likely many of
them will have been involved.
Because all the medals at
the 2020 Olympics and Para-
lympics are being made out of
waste electronic material.
So far, 78,000 tons of mobile
phones, laptops and iPads,
have been recycled into gold,
silver and bronze medals.
To d a y, To ky o w i l l m a r k a
year to the official start of the
Games of the XXXII Olympiad,
the city’s second summer
Olympics after 1964.
Remarkably, six of those
venues from 55 years ago,
including the sailing and
equestrian arenas, are still in
excellent condition and will
be used again next summer.
But, in other ways, the 2020
Olympics will be very different
indeed.
The 1964 games cost
£225million to stage – next
summer’s will cost around
£10billion.
But with it also
comes a new belief of
what the arrival of the
Games will mean to
the future of sport in
the country.
“Right now
more Japanese
companies are
interested in
investing in
sports,” said
Takeyuki Oya,
general manager of
the international de-
partment of the J
League, Japan’s top
football division. “Pre-
viously, sport was like PE –
something you do in
school. When you
graduated from school,
you wouldn’t do any more.
“But now sport is more
cultural and rooted in
community and the
government and
companies are
becoming more
aggressive in their
approach to sport.
“Hopefully,
after the
O l y m p i c s ,
their passion
for sport will
remain and
the J League is
one of those
sports they want
to invest in.”
The first wave
of ticket sales in
Japan itself,
which took the form of a lot-
tery, resulted in record sales so
far of 3.22m.
There will even be robots
involved – some to help
disabled people around the
stadia, some to help with
loading, some acting as
greeters or giving virtual tours.
There is building work
everywhere, especially near
the waterfront, where the new
Olympic Village is being built,
which will eventually hold
17,000 athletes and guests.
At Tokyo 2020, there will be
339 different sporting events.
And a new national stadium
is being constructed with a
capacity of more than 60,000
to stage the opening and
closing ceremonies, as well as
track and field athletics.
Tokyo is aready a busy city
- it is steeling itself to become
even busier.
RECYCLING
BRITAIN won four gold
medals in the 1964
Tokyo Olympics – all in
track and field.
Lynn “The Leap”
Davies won the men’s
long jump, Mary Rand
the women’s long jump,
Ann Packer the 800m
in a world record 2:01.1
and Ken Matthews, who
died last month aged
84, won the 20km walk.
Britain also won 12
silvers and two bronzes.
One of the biggest
stories was Ethiopian
Abebe Bikila, who
retained his marathon
title to become the first
Olympian to win it
twice. While gold in
the heavyweight
boxing division
was won by a
certain Joe
Frazier (right).

SPORTS ARE...
BY RICHARD LEWIS
FIVE “new” sports have been
approved for Tokyo 2020 –
with sport climbing one of
the most fascinating.
The culture of rock
climbing is big in Japan and,
in a year’s time, this will
involve bouldering, lead and
speed combined for men and
women, with a total of 40
athletes taking part.
As the official Tokyo 2020
website explains: “Speed
climbing pits two climbers
against each other, climbing
a fixed route on a 15-metre
wall. In bouldering, climbers
scale fixed routes on a 4m
wall. In lead climbing,
athletes attempt to climb as
high as possible on a wall
measuring over 15m within a
fixed time. Each climber will
compete in three disciplines.”
Last seen at Beijing in
2008, baseball and sister
sport softball are
reinstated, while
skateboarding, karate
and surfing will make
their Games debuts.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC’s father
has slammed the behaviour
of Wimbledon fans as ‘ugly’
after his son beat Roger
Federer in the thrilling final.
Srdjan Djokovic was
furious at the perceived
disrespect shown towards
his son on Centre Court last
week and said: “There was
a lot of unfriendliness in the
cheering of the English fans
towards Novak.
“I have the impression
that they were less
cheering for Federer and
more against Novak,” he
said. “I think that is ugly
and the fair play they are
proud of here it did not
exactly show itself in the
best light.
“Can you imagine them
whistling after the first
missed service to the
winner of the past
Wimbledon. He did not
deserve that, he was always
amazing toward everyone.”
