OF FAX
“Franny was cleared and it was a bit
heartbreaking. That was the closest
I ever got to Wembley.”
Tyrer (above, left) was released by
his hometown club, before settling on
the other side of the Pennines with
Fax. He is now second on the club’s
all-time points-scoring list, after a
prolific decade in the Championship,
and did not think he’d get another
chance to face Saints.
But a roller-coaster cup run (Tyrer
celebrates with team-mates after
knocking out Bradford in the quarter-
finals, top) has changed that. Now Fax
- 50/1 outsiders for the game – are
out to achieve Mission: Impossible.
Plasterer Tyrer added: “If Saints
turn up with the right mindset, then
it’s simple, we don’t win the game.
“But if they don’t show up, and we
play at our absolute maximum, then
you never know...”

STEVE TYRER’S Halifax might
be big underdogs in the Challenge
Cup semi-final with St Helens –
but they have the same number
of players with winners’ medals.
Runaway Super League leaders
Saints have not lifted the trophy
since 2008, with skipper James Roby
the sole survivor from that team.
Roby also played the season before,
when Catalans Dragons were beaten
at Wembley, and Tyrer was 18th man.
The St Helens-born centre was
preparing to play until the morning
of the game, when Francis Meli
recovered from illness sufficiently to
take his place in the side.
But Tyrer still got a medal, and his
part-time team are now aiming for
one of the biggest shocks in the
competition’s history. Tyrer, 30, said:
Ex-Saint Tyrer dreams of
huge upset to finally give
him a taste of Wembley
St Helens v Halifax Saturday, 4.30pm
GREAT BRITAIN have launched their
first shirt in 12 years ahead of this
autumn’s tour of New Zealand and
Papua New Guinea.
Wayne Bennett will lead
the squad in two Tests
against the Kiwis, and one
with Tonga in Hamilton,
before heading for a final
game in Port Moresby.
The Lions shirt (Sam
Burgess with new kit, below) has not
been worn since 2007, and St Helens
prop Alex Walmsley said: “It reminds
you of those iconic teams of
the early 2000s. They were
heroes of mine and will
always stick in my mind.
“If I was lucky enough to be
picked, and get to wear the
jersey, it would be an
unbelievable honour.”
