40 MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL - August 2019
KIT BUILD
more detail, so decided instead to superglue
a piece of plasticard to the front edge of part
B01, clean up the joint, polish it and then drop
the part in place. By doing this I removed
any need for iller, only a brush over with Mr.
Hobby Cement S being needed to create a
neat inish.
The only other areas of dificulty centred
around the lower wing to rear fuselage joint
(dealt with using Mr. Surfacer 500) and then
the union of the tailplanes to the in. Here, the
it was so tight that the tailplanes would not sit
at 90 ̊ to the in, so their locating slots needed
to be opened up and reshaped slightly to
allow the parts to set at a more realistic angle.
The sidewalls were first painted with a layer of Tamiya AS-12 bare Metal Silver, masked and then sprayed with a layer of Tamiya XF-71 Cockpit green lightened with around 30% Flat White. Details were
picked out with Games Workshop acrylics.
Eduard’s ‘Spitfire FR Mk.XIV Seatbelts STEEL’ set (FE981) was used to replicate the Spitfire’s
distinctive seat straps. Being simple in design, these were easy to fit, only care being needed
to thread them through the delicate photo-etch bracket behind the seat. All of the straps were
secured with superglue.
The instrument detail needs to be removed
from the kit panel, before the Eduard parts can
be glued in place.
The instrument panel and its surrounding
fuselage member, assembled and painted. This
is a real highlight of the completed cockpit.
The inner fuselage walls were painted in an identical fashion to the separately finished sidewalls. Note the delicate chipping, added using Games Workshop Ironbreaker.
