T
he spectacular Ballyhack
Golf Club in Roanoke,
Virginia, opened ten years
ago. It was designed by
American Lester George,
whose CV includes the restoration of
the famous Old White course at The
Greenbrier in West Virginia.
This sprawling layout spreads out
over 190 acres close to the eastern
slopes of the famous Blue Ridge
Mountains, with George taking his
inspiration from the Scottish Highlands.
It plays through ridges and alongside
moorland, featuring elevation changes,
old-style rough-edged bunkers and
accommodating fairways. There’s also
an impressive double green complex on
the 13th and 15th holes.
Ballyhack forms part of the Dormie
Network, which groups together under
one membership umbrella a fine
collection of exclusive clubs across six
different US states. The idea of the
Dormie Network is to provide
destinations that not only offer superb
golf courses but also the very best in
accommodation, hospitality and dining.
All six courses are ranked highly in
their respective states, with a design
CV that boasts some of the best
names in the business, from Bill
Coore and Ben Crenshaw to Arnold
Palmer and Tom Fazio.
